I never knew that the Hello Kitty icon was created by a Japanese company.

I remember this brand from when I was young in Madeira. The shops I can remember in Funchal, which seem terribly old fashioned now, had this cute figure on lots of items.

Over the years, as more tourist shops took over the streets as our island's tourism industry started to take over and dominate our economy, the Hello Kitty brand seemed to disappear and be replaced by the usual tourist souvenir type items. The international airport runway extension bringing ever increasing numbers of visitors and tourists to our holiday island certainly had a lot to answer for - or maybe I was just growing up...

Now, in the last 18 months or two years, I seem to see this charming brand return to our Madeira shops again. It might have been there all the time, of course, but now there are children to bring it to my attention.

I never really noticed the lack of mouth, but since you mention it, it is obvious.
